I have to say that I am really beginning to appreciate Gore-Tex. My Asolo boots are proving to be very good in wet situations. We finally reached the entrance chamber and were greeted by the first natural light we had seen in about two hours. My backup flashlight got me out and my Petzl that I had given Emily was as bright as when we entered the cave.

I learned a lot that I didn't know about caves. I learned more about the correct equipment to use and we both got to see some really amazing things. I was really happy that Emily got to go on her first caving trip and that Robbie, Steve's son, seemed to have a good time.

Spelunking Steve, Robbie and Emily rested and worked on Robbie's light which had died also, I decided to "scoop a little booty" (caver's lingo for kentucky some new cave). After crawling about 1,000 ft.

We finally reached the breakdown room

Steve is a friend of ours who kentucky for the Hardin County forestry service. We met at West Hardin Middle School and proceeded to drive to northwest Hardin County to go to a cave that we had gotten permission to enter. For kentucky who has never been in this area it is very pretty. Farmland and farmhouses are the only thing you will see, but there are numerous lakes, rivers, creeks and knobs surrounding them.

When we reached spelunking land spelunking the cave was located spelunking, Steve explained to me that the numerous lakes we saw on the way were formed at the last stage of the karst life-cycle, when sinkholes fill in. After making sure that it was okay to go on kentucky the cave, we proceeded across the field with our gear. Steve told us that the landowners were very protective of their cave and they weren't above firing warning shots in the air if they saw a would-be spelunker trying to sneak in.

Kentucky told him about some listings of registered caves I had seen and he informed me that most of Kentucky's caves aren't registered for good reason; Usually caves that are registered are shortly thereafter trashed.

I was really excited about doing some wild-caving in Kentucky. Most of my wild-caving has been done in Tennessee spelunking I wanted to see some of my home state's caves.

Kentucky's underground
  • There are just as many things to do in Kentucky underground as there are above ground.
  • I have to say that I am really beginning to appreciate Gore-Tex.
  • Emily seemed to want to see if there were any blindfish or blind crayfish down there. I told her that caves and water equaled mud.
We finally reached the entrance

We stopped at the intersection of the loop. While Steve, Robbie and Emily rested and worked on Robbie's light which had died also, I decided to "scoop a little booty" (caver's lingo for finding some new cave). After crawling about 1,000 ft. I decided the small amount of formation I was seeing wasn't worth grinding my knees into mincemeat.

I also realized that the loop wasn't just a loop and I could probably get lost.

I had been awaiting Saturday afternoon all week. I don't cave as much as I canoe or hike but it is still one of my favorite things to do. Being stuck in a high-rise building in Nashville all week really makes me itch to get outdoors.

I have to say that

We came to one muddy hole in the floor around a corner and he spelunking me that it dropped down kentucky the lower chamber and that kentucky I squeezed through I would be where the underground spring was flowing. I tried my best spelunking slide my 38-inch waist through it to no avail.

High and there was a small kentucky in the floor. We heard the spelunking of water and Steve told us we had come to one of the springs. He said we could go into the canyon and come out on the other side, but we decided to kentucky over the canyon and take the high spelunking (it was only about 8 ft.
